The EDS summer school, started in 2020, is a special educational initiative targeted towards graduate and senior undergraduate students, postdoctoral fellows and early career professionals, with a focus on a specific theme/topic from EDS fields of interest. The duration should be 3 to 5 days, with a cohesive set of tutorial-style lectures centered around the chosen theme/topic. The summer school conducted either in person, online or hybrid mode, given the prevailing local conditions and regulations. It is highly desirable to augment the lectures with laboratory visits and experiments, simulation exercises, equipment/tool demo, panel discussions, and industry visits as applicable. By design and requirement, summer school is intended to be different from conferences and workshops or mini colloquia and distinguished lectures.  It is designed to broaden and/or deepen the knowledge and skills of the participants in the topical area. The lecturers should be experts in the chosen field, but need not be IEEE distinguished lecturers. To keep the costs at a reasonable level, it is desirable to leverage local experts along with a few invited experts from outside. There should be at least 30 participants. The summer school should be advertised well in advance to get a good mix of local and outstation participants. At the end of summer school, a quiz or poster presentation for the participants may be arranged and a certificate of participation may be distributed. After the conclusion of the summer school, a report must be submitted for publication in the EDS Newsletter.

2023 IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS) Summer School

The 2023 summer school is expected to be conducted in person and/or in hybrid mode and must be concluded by August 2023. It is highly desirable to augment the lectures with laboratory visits and experiments, simulation exercises, equipment/tool demos, panel discussions, and industry visits as applicable. By design and requirement, summer school is intended to be different from conferences and workshops or mini colloquia and distinguished lectures.  It is designed to broaden and/or deepen the knowledge and skills of the participants in the topical area. Funding: During 2023, EDS plans to support about 3 to 4 summer school proposals. For the selected proposals, EDS will provide funding of up to US $10,000. This funding can be used towards travel and accommodation support for lecturers, expenses for food, coffee, local transportation, mementos for lecturers, etc, as applicable. The EDS funding will be provided as a grant with EDS bearing no responsibility for any losses incurred. The organizers can charge nominal registration fees for attendees to augment the funding from EDS to cover other expenses of the summer school. For attendees who are non-EDS members, an additional fee may be included to give them on the spot EDS membership. The organizers are welcome to generate additional sponsorships to support the summer school expenses and recruitment of new EDS members.

Proposal Submission: The proposals can be submitted by any EDS chapter (including a student chapter) in collaboration with a host institute (preferably a university).  The document should be on 8.5×11-inch sized paper with single-spaced, 12-point, Times New Roman font. The proposal shall not exceed 4 single-sided pages in length, covering the following aspects:

Page 1: Brief description of the capabilities of the host institute and the organizing team, along with a description of the proposed theme/topic for the summer school, indicating expected benefits for the target audience.

Page 2: Proposed list of experts with brief bios and their lecture titles (If necessary, use an Appendix to provide additional information about the experts)

Page 3: Program schedule, with a tentative timetable of lectures, labs, demos, industry visits, panel discussions, quizzes, posters, etc.

Page 4: Funding details with expected fund inflow from various sources and outflow for various expenses

Selection Process: The EDS Educational Committee under the leadership of the EDS VP for Education will select the most appropriate proposal, based on the quality of the technical program, and its ability to deliver the stated educational content to the target audience with due consideration to geographical and regional distribution.
