Steven A. Ringel is a Professor and holds the Neal Smith Endowed Chair in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ohio State. He is also the Founding Director of The Ohio State University Institute for Materials Research (IMR), which encompasses Ohio State’s multi-college materials research enterprise spanning 6 colleges, more than 140 faculty groups, and both government and industry supported centers of research excellence.  Professor Ringel is an internationally-recognized authority for his research innovation and leadership in electronic materials and devices, and particularly for his pioneering contributions that are advancing high efficiency and low cost compound semiconductor-silicon integrated photovoltaics and also for his efforts to advance wide bandgap electronic and photonic device technologies through the development and application of several defect characterization methods.

Professor Ringel has authored more than 300 technical papers, given more than 120 invited talks and co-authored several books.  He has produced more than 70 PhD and MS students while at Ohio State and currently leads a group of 18 students, postdocs, and research scientists, focused on novel photovoltaics, optoelectronics, GaN power devices and device reliability.  His recognitions include the 1994 NSF National Young Investigator Award, the Ohio State Scott Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement in Engineering, the OSU Harrison Award for Excellence in Engineering, seven best paper awards from international conferences and societies, AAAS Fellow, AIAA Associate Fellow, editor of the IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices, and founding editor of the IEEE Journal of Photovoltaics. He sits on several boards, including current Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) – Low Energy Electronic Systems Division.  Professor Ringel is highly interested in university-industry translational interfaces and entrepreneurship, and is co-founder of 4Power LLC, a startup company focused on high-performance photovoltaics. Professor Ringel received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1991.
