Information for Authors

JMEMS will accept manuscripts for review either in a Letters format or in the traditional eight-page maximum length Original Manuscript format.  (See below for exceptions to the eight-page limit.)

Authors are invited to submit their papers to JMEMS using the web-based submission software of SCHOLARONE Manuscripts, uploading their manuscripts to the JMEMS SCHOLARONE Manuscripts Website.

Papers submitted may not have been published elsewhere nor be under consideration for publication except by JMEMS. Authors are required to reference all relevant prior work of significance to the paper including publications authored by themselves. To avoid plagiarism, submissions may be cross-checked by sophisticated computer routines.

A typical accepted submission to JMEMS will contain: a brief and clear synopsis of the paper in an abstract; an introduction that establishes the context for the paper; a section that details results including experimental data and a thorough discussion of these results; and a final section that states conclusions and implications from the results described in the paper.

Authors should confine the length of their published papers to eight or fewer pages. Consider carefully the contents and sizes of figures and tables and the necessity for including them. If your manuscript is likely to exceed 8 printed pages you will need to convince editors that this size is necessary. Keep in mind that your submission will be studied carefully by reviewers; help them to do this effectively by coupling figures with their captions, and by making clear the placement of figures in the text. Effective immediately, all submissions must be in 2 column format. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR JMEMS LETTERS - JMEMS Letter is limited to 3 pages. Please note, biographies are not allowed for JMEMS Letters. Please include a cover page explaining the novelty of the work and need for immediacy.

EXTENDED CONFERENCE PAPERS SUBMISSION – JMEMS welcomes extended conference paper submissions. When submitting your manuscript please include a cover letter in which you explain what additional material was included over the conference publication. A newly submitted paper must contain 50% or greater new and substantive material, and it must include the conference presentation as a cited reference. Novelty is justified best by new experimental results, enhanced modeling and characterization or further system integration efforts. In order to aid the review process, authors submitting papers based upon conference presentations must upload a copy of the conference paper as an appendix to a newly submitted paper.

English Language Editing Services
English language editing services can help refine the language of your article and reduce the risk of rejection without review. IEEE authors are eligible for discounts at several language editing services; visit the IEEE Author Center to learn more. Please note these services are fee-based and do not guarantee acceptance.
ORCID
All IEEE journals require an Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) for all authors. ORCIDs enable accurate attribution and improved discoverability of an author’s published work. The author will need a registered ORCID in order to submit a manuscript or review a proof in this journal.
Follow these steps to link a ScholarOne account to a registered ORCID:
1. Login to ScholarOne and click on your name in the top right corner of the screen.
2. Click E-mail / Name in the dropdown menu.
3. In the ORCID section at the top of the page, click the appropriate link to either register for a new ORCID or associate the account with an existing ORCID.
4. A new page will open to create and/or validate your ORCID.  Once the validation is complete, the new page will close and you will return to ScholarOne.
5. Save the changes to your ScholarOne user account. Authors who do not have an ORCID in their ScholarOne user account will be prompted to provide one during submission.
Instructions to obtain permission to reuse published information - The process for obtaining permission is now automated and requires the individual to locate the content in Xplore. Once there, please click on the "permission" icon located in the left navigation side of the abstract page. This takes you to the application.  Please note, these requests should no longer be emailed to the pubs permission email alias.
